A student's grade should indicate where they are now, not an average of an entire period. Use scales with fewer gradations, like A–F rather than 100–0. With 100 gradations, reliability goes down and many don't see a difference between 76 and 80, let alone 64 and 65. Let students know how they're going to be graded. It is time for the entire educational system to start re-examining our current grading paradigm. With the help of other educators, students, parents, and interested groups, we can take steps to improve this grading system and restore students’ love of learning.
