The afk timer actually hurts gameplay like this which has been encouraged by Rare with their stealth emotes. There should be a menu option where you can toggle the afk timer for your teammates or something, similarly to voting to lock them in the brig. There is nothing to grind while being afk so i don't see a problem with that. If you want to start this game you need at least 1 hour to play or it doesen't make sense to start playing at all. Obviously Rare realized you can't be active 100% of the time. Everyone needs a break (stretch, bathroom, food/drink, etc.), but if you know you're going to be inactive for longer than 10 minutes, just check on your pirate before the 10 minutes are up, move the camera, and reset the timer. 10 minutes is very generous.
