From east to west, the High Plains rise in elevation from around 750 m (2500 ft) to over 1800 m (6000 ft). The High Plains are semiarid, receiving between 250–500 mm (10–20 in) of precipitation annually. This is a gently rolling region containing rangelands broken with streams and rivers running from west to east, draining toward the Cross Timbers and Prairies Region to the east and southeast. The Rolling Plains Ecological Region is bordered on the south by the Edwards Plateau Ecological Region and on the west by the High Plains Ecological Region. Western Coastal Plains stretches from Kerala in the south to Gujarat in the north passing through Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. The western coastal plains stretch for 1500 km north to south and its width ranges from 10 to 25 km. The West Continental Shelf is at its widest off the Bombay coast.
