The mask of the broodmother for example enables posion on any weapon that has no posion effect. But it does not improve already poisonous weapons. The poison effect is quite weak (not speaking about one time use items) and also no enemy has a weakness to it. And it does not scale with weapon damage or upgrades as far as I know.
