Geologic eons
Eons are the largest unit of geologic time. Epochs are the smallest unit of geologic time. A geologic epoch is divided further into eras.Era, a very long span of geological time; in formal usage, the second longest portion of geologic time after an eon. Ten eras are recognized by the International Union of Geological Sciences. An era is composed of one or more geological periods. The stratigraphic, or rock, term that corresponds to ‘era’ is ‘erathem.’.Although the term aeon may be used in reference to a period of a billion years (especially in geology, cosmology and astronomy), its more common usage is for any long, indefinite period.
